About Dance and the Arts
All of us here at the Dance Connection can tell you that
dance is an ancient and universal art form in which the body is used as medium for artistic expression and we love to pass on this knowledge
to our students. It is deeply connected to all other forms of art, and its practice offers physical and psychological benefits. From ancient
rituals to contemporary performances, dance has continually evolved to reflect and influence the societies in which it exists.
History and Evolution
Ancient origins:
The earliest evidence of dance dates back to cave paintings from around 8000 BCE in India, and
Egyptian tomb paintings from 3300 BCE. In early human societies, dance was likely used for religious rituals, storytelling,
and communication before written language existed.
Medieval and Renaissance courts:
In Europe, formal court dances emerged during the Middle Ages as a sign of refinement and social status. This led to
the development of ballet in the Italian and French royal courts during the Renaissance.
Modern and contemporary dance: The 20th century saw a rebellion against the strict conventions of ballet, giving
rise to modern and contemporary dance. Pioneers like Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham sought more expressive, natural forms
of movement.
Contemporary fusions: Today, dance continues to evolve by blending styles, drawing inspiration
from different cultural traditions, and incorporating new technology.
Relationships Between Dance and Other Arts
Dance interacts with other artistic disciplines, sometimes using them as accompaniment and other times inspiring them.
Music:From early synchronized drumming to the complex scores of modern music, dance and music have been created
alongside each other. Tap and gumboot dancing even provide their own rhythmic, audible accompaniment.
Visual arts: The relationship between dance and visual arts has a long history, with dancers inspiring visual
artists from Edgar Degas in the 19th century to avant-garde artists in the 20th century.
Theater and literature: Ballet and Indian classical dance often tell stories through emotional, choreographed movements.
In the 20th century, Merce Cunningham challenged this narrative tradition by creating abstract works that focused on the movement
itself.
Performance art: While performing arts typically use the body as a tool for storytelling, performance art often uses
the artist's body as the subject and object of the art itself.

Folk and ethnic dance: Traditional dances, such as Irish step dancing, Indian Bharatanatyam, and Spanish flamenco, are specific to a particular culture or region and reflect its history and values.
