Here at the Dance Connection, we have some of best Lyrical dance instructors in the industry. Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance that emphasizes very strong, emotional expression and storytelling through movement. Dancers use the music’s lyrics or melody to help inspire movements and convey very deep personal emotions, combining the grace and technique of ballet with dynamic freedom of jazz. The style involves continuous motions, graceful extensions, and powerful emotionally-charged performances that aim to tell a story or convey a specific feeling.
Lyrica dance apparently originated in Russia in the early twentieth century. It became quite a popular dance style in the 1970’s where it was often deemed a subgenre of jazz dance, with the defining characteristics of having classical ballet technique and telling a story.
Lyrical is occasionally defined as a combination of techniques from jazz, ballet and contemporary. As implied by its name, lyrical is set to songs with lyrics, which the dancer connects to with the dance.
Lyrical dance has become a well-established genre of modern or contemporary dance.
Our lyrical dance instructors will teach you how to convey your emotions as a song stirs your emotions. This will require precise yet fluid movements of the body, while clearly relaying emotions in their facial expressions. The choreography evolves as much to the tempo of the song as it is to the lyrics.
The vast majority of students are drawn to lyrical dance as it offers a chance to express individuality, much more so than other rigid conventions of ballet or jazz. With lyrical jazz, students get the rare opportunity to tell their audience a heartfelt, sometimes very personal story through movement.
We have found that adult performers might lean toward minimalist composition such as those of Steve Reich or Philip Glass. And as of recent, African music has become much more popular. Young performers usually choose to dance to their favourite pop songs.
There’s a number of benefits to choosing to take up lyrical dance. You or your child will be the star of the show! The lyrical recital pieces are almost always the most anticipated performances at the dance studio recitals due to their moving interpretations of the music and thoughtful choregraphy.
